Lamar
If fresh air, genuine southern hospitality, and down-home charm are what you are looking for, Lamar is the place.
With a population of less than 1,000, Lamar doesn't have traffic jams and long lines. The pace here is slower, more gentle. The people are friendly. The food, southern cooking at its best, is fantastic. While you're in town, be sure to try the regional cuisine at Country Catering or stay the night at the Mims House, a historic home built in the 1800s. Visitors are always welcome in Lamar!
Lamar Attractions
Historic Houses & Buildings
Lamar continues to honor the past by preserving many of the historic buildings for the future. Many of the historic sites can be visited on the Lamar Driving Tour (outside viewing only, please). For example, visitors can see the DuBose House, built in the 1800's by Captain George Mims, or the Windham House, which was built before the Civil War and is surrounded by 100 year old oak trees.
Parnell Park
One of the best spots in town for a picnic. The land for the park was given by Mrs. Florence A. Colclough to the Althea Garden Club to be used as a tribute to those who served in WWII. The park was officially dedicated on October 18, 1945.
Governor's Run Golf Course
Named in honor of Lamar-native Governor David Beasely, this challenging 18-hole championship golf course is a golfer's delight.
The Egg & I
Established in 1957 by Rivers and Levern Scarborough, it is the largest family-owned egg farm in the state. When in full capacity, it contains 212,000 chickens, which produce 156 million eggs per year.
Country Catering of Lamar
Established in 1979, this twenty year old restaurant and catering business serves true southern cuisine in an informal buffet atmosphere. The restaurant is located in a beautiful country home filled with antiques and a hand-carved bank teller's window from the old Bank of Lamar. Guests sit at family-style tables.
